Neonatology
What is Neonatology?
Neonatology is a subset of medicine and peadiatrics that concerns the medical care of newborn infants, particularly those that are ill or premature. It includes the delivery of the infant and the care in the postnatal ward or if there are problems that need attending to often the care in neonatal intensive care units.
My Experience
I have a special interest in extreme immaturity and in complicated infants. During my housemanship and registrarship I trained at Groote Schuur Hospital under Prof M Harrison and Prof A Horn. I spent close to half of my total training time in neonatology and have treated a wide variety of neonatal conditions and complicated diseases. I have a passion for small infants and have developed a number of neonatal skills. Recently I took care of what is most likely the youngest COVID survivor in Namibia and possibly in Africa, a baby born at 24-weeks with 470 gram who spent 9.5 months in the NICU until she was ready for discharge home: https://namwebsolutions.com/doctorsteffen/publicity/
